TOKYO, JAPAN, September 22, 2024 — Award winning documentary filmmaker Rionne McAvoy celebrated a major milestone with the successful screening of his award-winning documentary, The Ones Left Behind: The Plight of Single Mothers in Japan, at the prestigious Shibuya Human Trust Cinema. The event was attended by high-profile VIPs, including Digital Minister Taro Kono MP, British Ambassador to Japan Julia Longbottom, and Norwegian Ambassador to Japan Kristin Iglum.
Following the screening, Mr. Kono gave a speech about the film and the issues it addresses. This was followed by speeches from Executive Producer Ivan Kovac, NPO YouMeWe founder Michael Perry-Clemons, and the ambassadors. Following on, a special panel discussion was held, where McAvoy and panel discussion members Yoriko Madoka, Chisa Fujiwara, and Mayumi Nishida engaged in an open conversation about the documentary’s exploration of the economic and social struggles faced by single mothers in Japan. The presence of influential figures such as Taro Kono and the ambassadors underscored the film’s resonance with both domestic and international audiences, highlighting the importance of addressing child poverty and family welfare on a global stage.
“I am deeply honored to have such esteemed guests here tonight,” McAvoy said during the event. “Their support means the world to me, and it reinforces the message of the film—that together, we can create a future where no one is left behind.”
The documentary has received critical acclaim for its raw and impactful storytelling. McAvoy’s work continues to bring attention to Japan’s ongoing social issues, including the rising number of single mothers and their struggles with poverty, inequality, and lack of social support. The screening marked a significant step forward in the campaign to inspire policy discussions and social change.
The Ones Left Behind: The Plight of Single Mothers in Japan will next screen in Shinjuku at K's Cinema from November 9 to 15 at 10am every morning.
